The Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art (ICA at MECA) in Portland presents the exhibition Kate Gilmore from July 3 - August 4, 2013. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 20th, from 3-6 PM. A large-scale, 24-hour public performance will take place in Portland, Maine's Monument Square beginning on Saturday, July 20th, at 10 AM and ending on Sunday, July 21th, at10 AM. ICA entrance, events and lectures are free and open to the public.
Kate Gilmore’s work explores themes of displacement, struggle, and female identity. She is the sole protagonist in her performative videos, in which she attempts to conquer self-constructed obstacles. Within the ICA there will be a survey of past videos and performances, bringing together works from 2004 until the present. This exhibition will also include a newly commissioned performance, which will take place in Portland’s bustling Monument Square. The Monument will be surrounded on all sides by a four-foot-high cubic structure of hot pink stairs with a group of women walking, climbing for 24 hours. |
