Please join Artists in Context for an afternoon of film and conversation! This salon, curated by and featuring the work of local animators Jo Dery and Sophia Tintori, will highlight visual translations of scientific knowledge and natural phenomena. All ages are welcomed and family participation is encouraged!
The screening will be followed by an informal discussion on the potential as well as the implications of communicating scientific knowledge through an accessible art form.

Sophia Tintori (creaturecast.org) is a lab technician in Casey Dunn's evolutionary biology lab at Brown University, as well as an animator, website manager and editor for the Dunn lab's CreatureCast.org. CreatureCast.org features character-driven, jargon-free stories about the natural world in the forms of video, audio, still image and written word. Her science videos for CreatureCast.org have been featured in national and international film festivals, NPR's science friday, the science journal Nature's website, and have received the public praises of science journalists such as PZ Meyers and Carl Zimmer. In the fall Sophia will be beginning her PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Jo Dery (jodery.com) is an interdisciplinary artist who experiments with narrative forms, using both traditional and new media. Her works inlude short films/videos, drawings, prints, illustrations, installations, and artist/small-press book publications. Her films and videos have screened at festivals nationaly and internationally, including at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. She has been awarded grants for her film/video work by the LEF Foundation, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and The Free History Project. She has exhibited her drawings and prints in Providence, New York, San Francisco, Portland, and Los Angeles. Her books can be found in independent stores like Ada Books (Providence), Cinders (New York), Quimby's (Chicago) and Little Otsu (San Francisco). She holds a BFA in Film/Animation/Video from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Godard College. She lives and works in Providence, RI.
