OneBook Book Club: Research Methods in Geography and Related Fields
Thursday, December 8. 7-9 PM
Design Studio for Social Intervention
1946 Washington St., 2nd Floor, Boston

The OneBook Book Club returns to Boston! This one will feature discussion of several articles and book chapters selected by resident geographer/AIC co-director Marie Cieri that should provide insight into a variety of research methods (interviewing, landscape interpretation, mapping as a mode of investigation, etc.) for artists and community activists alike. Emphasis will be on qualitative approaches (though mixtures with quantitative methods will be within our scope) and on overarching themes that are important to consider when undertaking research and representational endeavors, including reflexivity, positionality, power and ethics.

This OneBook is a follow-up to the research session held at AIC’s “Connected and Consequential” conference in Boston in June, and Cieri’s selection of readings will be a response, in part, to questions and suggestions about research that came up at that session. Depending on participant interest, this may be the first of two or three OneBook sessions and/or workshops on research that AIC will sponsor over the next several months -- a second may be led by a member of the Boston Radical Reference Collective, and a third will likely feature discussion of guided research practice by participants prior to the session.
