Local group offers video, talk on building sustainable communities

Can Mt. Desert Island transition to a cleaner energy community? Some believe it is quite possible and have begun planning for it, meeting together as the Hancock County Transition Town organization. Members of the group will be showing a video and talking to College of the Atlantic's Human Ecology Forum on Tuesday, April 12 at 4 p.m. in the college's McCormick Lecture Hall.

The presentation, "Transition 101 - Building Sustainable Communities," will feature a video featuring communities around the world finding creative local solutions to climate change - creating their own currencies, planting trees, growing food, launching pubs and celebrating the idea of community. The Transition Town movement, focusing on moving from oil dependency to local resiliency, began in England in 2005; it has since spread.

Location: McCormick Lecture Hall, College of the Atlantic, 105 Eden Street Bar Harbor, ME 04609
