Documentary Screening and Talk

11 am–12 pm
Screening of the documentary film "In Tahrir Square – 18 Days of Egypt's Unfinished Revolution" directed by Emmy-winning filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill.

In 2011, O'Neill and Alpert were on the scene in Cairo during the 18 days that brought down President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year regime, capturing the sights, sounds and passion of a modern-day revolution. Their documentary brings viewers into the streets of Cairo to experience first hand what began as a small, peaceful demonstration and quickly grew into a movement that changed Egypt forever.

1–2 pm
Skype session with Shaimaa Khalil, BBC World Service Arab Affairs editor
Moderated by SMFA faculty Jeannie Simms and her students.

In her six years with the BBC Shaimaa has reported from different parts of the Middle East and the USA. She works across the different platforms of the BBC including TV, radio and online. As part of the BBC's coverage of the Arab Spring, Shaimaa travelled to Egypt where she was deployed for a number of months to monitor the fast moving developments of the story: Libya; Lebanon; Jordan; Lebanese-Syrian borders; Kuwait; Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Shaimaa presented and produced a documentary about a possible uprising in Saudi Arabia titled: "Saudi: The People Want" which received great reviews in the Middle East and was widely screened in Saudi Arabia.
