Description: The idea of "art for art's sake" is a relatively young one. In the premodern world, sculpture, painting and design were created for active use; objects' adornment cannot be separated from their function. This talk with graduate student Gallery Talk lecturer Beatrice Kitzinger will range from ancient Greece, Rome and the Near East to medieval Europe, discussing the useful elements of art and art's active place in historical domestic, religious and political life.
